Tokyo Godfathers (2003) dir: Satoshi Kon
Even a homeless teenage runaway needs a Christmas present: You filthy old pervert !
It's a Christmas present from God: Better give me a little extra, I’m eating for two !
A little baby
Powdery snow on its cheeks
On this holy night.
You're not selling me into slavery: I always wanted to die drunk in a nice house !
You can't raise a child, you're homeless: A hostess club won't be open at this hour !
Holy cow, now we have a gunfight at a wedding: The waitress just offed the gangster !
We're homeless bums: Not action movie heroes !
Now we're breastfeeding and drinking tea: Geezer Grandma !
So Ken died huh?
AIDS?
He slipped on the soap in the bathtub.
My mother's white breath
As she watches me set out.
On a long journey.
You'd see bruises sometimes .
The poor woman !
Not on her, on him .
Kiyoko ?
Papa ?
Ode to Joy !
Being able to speak freely: Is the lifeblood of love!
Are you a cop ?: I'm just a bum who is passing by !
Returning stolen goods to a thief: How could we be so dumb ?
Very scary at the end. Widely dismissed, even by Satoshi Kon fans, but it's a masterpiece on many levels. Note the several cartooning styles juxtaposed in one movie. The world's weirdest road-buddy-John-Wayne movie and my favorite Christmas movie (until I revert to cliche and watch Die Hard). You'll hate it, but watch it anyway. Check it out!
Trigger warning: This movie features a white Christmas.
